by Truly Beauty

Hyperpigmentation can affect different areas of the body, including your underarms. Like a bad breakout, those pesky dark shadows on your armpits can have a major impact on your self-confidence. In the summer time, it can even reduce your desire to wear tank tops and sleeveless dresses.

We know the impact dark spots can have on your self-esteem. That's why we created....the Bright Pitties Bundle, an underarm discoloration skincare routine designed to quell hyperpigmentation and discoloration anywhere on the body.

Here's everything you need to know about dark spots on the skin, and why you need our Bright Pitties Bundle in your life.

What Causes Dark Spots

Dark spots on the skin can be caused by a number of different reasons:

Sun Damage

One of the most common causes of dark spots on the skin is excessive sun exposure. That's why discoloration often appears on the face first, as that's the area most often exposed to the sun. That said, it can also affect others areas of your body, including your underarms.

Sun damage causes the skin to increase melanin production to protect the skin against UV rays, which causes the appearance of dark marks and shadows on the skin.

Friction

It could even be your clothes causing your hyperpigmentation issues.

"A major issue with underarms is that that area of skin is usually rubbing against something else," says Dr. Alicia Barba of the Miami-based Barba Dermatology and Barba Skin Clinic. "Whether it’s your hair, skin or clothes, or even friction from underarm shaving or waxing, all those factors can affect the pigment in your underarms."

Inflammation

From waxing and shaving to harsh skincare products or excessive exfoliation, anything that causes inflammation to the skin can result in skin discoloration. It is known as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

When the skin has an inflammatory reaction, it stimulates the production of more pigment, which makes the skin darker. In some cases, like those with darker skin types, it can be genetic since darker skin naturally appears under the arms.

How to Treat Dark Spots on the Underarms

If this skin condition is driving you crazy, there are multiple options for how to address and treat those dark spots on your pits. Just avoid overdoing it, as the skin in the underarm area is thin and delicate. Skincare ingredients like vitamin E, niacinamide, azelaic acid, retinol, and hydroquinone are the best ones for treating dark underarms.

Here are some other remedies for getting rid of dark spots on skin:

Gently Exfoliate

Exfoliation with scrubs or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) can be effective for correcting pigmentation issues like dark spots. It can also improve overall skin tone and enable other topical products to absorb better, maximizing their effects.

"A mild chemical exfoliant like glycolic acid or lactic acid is helpful," says dermatologist Dr. Marisa Garshick. "However, avoid over-scrubbing the area, as this can actually make things worse."

Moisturize

Keep your underarm area hydrated using a lightweight moisturizer to prevent dry skin which may increase the chance of friction, irritation, and ultimately, darkening.

Shave Properly

Poor shaving techniques can significantly increase your risk of getting dark spots on the skin. Always use a shaving cream, butter, or foam before putting razor to skin -- and never dry shave!

Spot Treat

If you've got visible dark spots on your underarms, you can spot treat the area by using a formula especially designed to fade dark patches. Some good ingredients to look out for include retinol (vitamin A), kojic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin C, and pomegranate. Apply the serum, oil, or cream directly to the affected areas to spot treat dark spots.

Wear Sunscreen

Think your dark spots are caused by sun damage? Invest in a high-quality sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from further damage. Sun damage causes an overproduction of melanin, which leads to dark spots on the skin. By wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, you are protecting yourself from a slew of skin concerns ranging from premature aging to dark spots on skin to skin cancer.

Vitamin B12: B12 aids cell turnover and collagen production, which maintains the barrier, reduces inflammation, and accelerates wound healing. It also prevents the dryness in the skin that leads to oil production, thereby preventing pimples and blackheads.

Coconut Milk: Coconut milk is known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it your perfect shaving buddy to combat irritation and ingrowns.

Salicylic Acid: Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that exfoliates away dead skin, oil, and product buildup for clear, smooth skin.

If you have a skin condition such as melasma or eczema, visit your dermatologist for professional guidance. In the meantime, avoid in-office treatments like chemical peels and microdermabrasion which might irritate the skin and worsen the appearance of dark spots on the skin.
